Introduction

DHAKA IS STILL SAFE

Groundwater of capital Dhaka is still safe. Water samples from 177 places were analyzed in the joint survey of DCH and SOES. But high level of Arsenic in 161 were less than WHO recommended value 0.01mg/l. It means that the water is safe for drinking. Arsenic concentration in the rest 16 samples also didn't exceed the maximum permissible level, which is 0.05 mg/l.

Dhaka WASA in mid 1997 also informed the city dwellers that Arsenic was not found in capital's groundwater. The WASA authorities several times analyzed the water of 10 deep tube-wells but high level of Arsenic was not found. WASA, the lone suppliers of water in the capital, everyday provide 850 million liter or water. Of the supplied water, 98 percent is Groundwater.

However, none can say how long the capital's groundwater will remain safe. High concentration of Arsenic was found in Groundwater in the areas adjacent to the capital. In this respect, the districts of Narsingdi and Narayanganj can be mentioned. These two are among the 15 districts affected by Arsenic severely. In Narayanganj, Arsenic more than 1.0 mg/l was found in 10 tube-wells. It is 100 times higher than the WHO recommended value and 50 times than the maximum permissible limit. Drinking water contaminated with 1.0 mg/l of Arsenic may lead to a disaster.
